Central Oregon Bird Control

Real Bird Solutions for Local Businesses & Homeowners

Hey there! I'm Mike, and I've been dealing with bird problems in Central Oregon for over 15 years. Let me tell you, the bird issues we face around Bend aren't like anywhere else. Between the pigeons downtown, the starlings nesting in warehouse eaves, and those pesky geese at Drake Park, I've seen it all.

The Bird Problem in Central Oregon
Last week, I was helping a restaurant owner on Minnesota Avenue who was at his wit's end. Birds had been pooping all over his outdoor seating area, and customers were complaining. "I'm losing business because of birds!" he told me, looking defeated. That's when I knew I had to share what I've learned about bird control with more folks in our community.

Birds might seem harmless, but they can cause real problems:
  • Bird poop damages building materials and paint
  • Nests clog gutters and vents
  • Some birds carry diseases
  • Droppings create slip hazards
  • Noise and mess drive away customers

Here in Central Oregon, we deal with specific bird troubles that folks in Portland or Eugene don't face. Our unique climate and landscape attract different bird species, and they behave differently here too.

Why Birds Love Bend (Maybe Too Much)
Birds aren't trying to make your life hard - they're just looking for food, water, and shelter. Bend provides all three in abundance:
  • Our parks and open spaces offer plenty of food
  • The Deschutes River gives birds a water source
  • Buildings around downtown and the Old Mill District create perfect nesting spots
  • Our mild seasons make this a year-round home for many species
I remember helping a property manager near the Old Mill who couldn't figure out why birds were attracted to his building more than others nearby. Turns out, the design of his roof created perfect little nooks for nests, and the landscaping provided easy access to bugs and seeds. Once we figured that out, fixing the problem was much easier.

Common Bird Problems in Bend and Redmond

Pigeons
These guys love urban areas like downtown Bend. They roost on ledges, under bridges, and on building roofs. The Century Drive overpass had a huge pigeon problem last year that we helped solve for ODOT.

Starlings
These small black birds create huge problems when they flock together. They've been a real headache around the Cascade Village Shopping Center and industrial areas in northeast Bend.

Geese
Canada geese love our parks and golf courses. The Old Back Nine Golf Course called us when geese were scaring away golfers and making a mess of their greens.

Woodpeckers
Yep, these guys can destroy wood siding and trim. I've seen houses in Broken Top and Awbrey Butte with significant woodpecker damage.

Bird Control Methods That Work in Our Climate
What works for bird control in other places doesn't always work here. Our high desert climate, with hot summers and cold winters, means we need solutions that can stand up to our weather.

Physical Barriers
  • Bird spikes for ledges and beams
  • Netting for warehouses and commercial buildings
  • Wire systems that prevent landing and roosting

We installed bird netting at a food processing facility in Redmond last month. The manager called yesterday to say, "I can't believe how clean everything is now! No more bird mess on my equipment."

Deterrents
  • Visual deterrents like reflective tape and predator decoys
  • Sound deterrents that use distress calls
  • Taste and smell repellents for specific areas

These work great but sometimes need to be changed up because birds are pretty smart. They can get used to fake owls or hawks if you never move them!

Habitat Modification
This is about making your property less bird-friendly:
  • Remove food sources
  • Limit water access
  • Eliminate nesting spots

A brewery near the Box Factory had birds nesting in their outdoor seating area. We helped them modify their pergola so birds couldn't build nests there anymore.

Why DIY Bird Control Often Fails
I talk to lots of business owners who tried fixing bird problems themselves. They usually end up calling us anyway because:

  • Store-bought deterrents aren't strong enough for our local bird populations
  • They don't know the specific habits of Central Oregon birds
  • Most DIY methods need constant maintenance
  • They miss hidden nesting areas
A hotel on 3rd Street tried scaring away birds with a plastic owl. Three weeks later, pigeons were literally sitting on top of it!

Our Approach to Bird Control
When we come to your property, we don't just slap up some bird spikes and call it good. We:
  1. Check your whole property to find ALL bird activity
  2. Figure out why birds are attracted to your specific location
  3. Create a plan that matches your budget and needs
  4. Use humane methods that won't harm birds
  5. Set up ongoing protection so birds don't come back

Success Stories from Around Central Oregon
A medical building near St. Charles had birds nesting above their main entrance. Patients were getting pooped on! We installed a combination of physical barriers and deterrents. Now the entrance is clean, and patients don't have to dodge droppings on their way to appointments.

The Pine Tavern downtown had pigeons roosting on their roof and making a mess of their famous outdoor dining area. We set up discreet barriers that kept the birds away without changing the historic look of the building. Their summer dinner service saw an immediate boost in reservations.

Get Help With Your Bird Problem
Bird issues don't fix themselves, and they usually get worse over time. Bird poop is acidic and can permanently damage building materials. Nests block drainage systems and can even cause fires when built near electrical equipment.

If birds are causing problems at your Central Oregon home or business, we can help. Our team knows the specific bird challenges in Bend, Redmond, Sisters, and surrounding areas. We've worked with:
  • Restaurants and hotels
  • Office buildings
  • Warehouses and factories
  • Parks and public spaces
  • Homes and condos
  • Historic buildings

Our solutions are humane, effective, and designed for our unique Central Oregon environment.
Birds are great in nature, but they don't belong on your building. Let's solve your bird problem together!
